Optical Transport Network Switch (OTN)

Customers continue to rely on the Infinera DTN digital reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) platform for three simple reasons: networks that can be turned up in days, services that can be activated in minutes and a pool of bandwidth that is always available on demand for any service from 155 megabits per second (Mb/s) to 100 gigabits per second (Gb/s).

The Infinera DTN remains the first platform in the world to combine the speed of optics with the simplicity of digital networking to deliver the world’s first wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) platform that includes a fully integrated, non-blocking, colorless, directionless, contentionless ROADM.

Designed with Infinera’s large-scale photonic integrated circuit (PIC) and an integrated Optical Transport Network (OTN) switch, the Infinera DTN converts network capacity into a pool of resources that can be tapped on demand. By leveraging Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (GMPLS)-based network intelligence and a plug-and-play architecture, operators can deliver any service to any customer on demand.

The result is reduced capital expenditure (CapEx), operational expenditure (OpEx) and increased service velocity.

Photonic integration Brings Moore’s Law to optical networks. The strategic value of a PIC is to enable low-cost optical-electronic-optical conversion, which facilitates and enables integrated switching as well as greater automation, control and performance. Also brings direct benefits in reduced size, power, costs and improved reliability. Results in lower CapEx, OpEx and a more flexible optical network.
Separation of line and tributary interfaces Decouples the service interfaces from the dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) line interfaces, enabling the entire line side to act as a pool of bandwidth resources for any service. This separation:

  • Enables fast turn-up of any service
  • Supports any service from 155 Mb/s to 100 Gb/s over any line-side technology (10G or 40G wavelengths)
  • Future-proofs new service types and rates
  • Adds new services without affecting existing services
  • Simplifies inventory and sparing as the line interface is not tied to the service

There is no stranded capacity on DWDM line cards as the service type changes. The DTN supports:

  • SONET/SDH to Ethernet evolution
  • OTN client interfaces
  • New SAN services
  • New digital video services
Fewer field-replaceable units Experience has shown that in real-world networks the Infinera solution typically requires one-tenth the number of field-replaceable units compared to competitors. This translates directly into lower operational costs.

Infinera DTN Platform Anatomy and Applications

The Infinera DTN platform enables valuable transport networking features, including integrated ODU1 (2.5 Gb/s) granularity digital switching and grooming for efficient and flexible bandwidth utilization, full digital performance monitoring, integrated digital service protection and end-to-end service provisioning. It supports 800 Gb/s of DWDM capacity (80 channels, 10 Gb/s each) in a bay, or 400 Gb/s (40 channels, 10 Gb/s each) in 20 rack units. It can also support multi-chassis configurations across several racks to support multi-way junctions and to create a multi-fiber-direction, multi-terabit transport system that’s managed as a single network element.
